Who Are We?

LowNote Music Publishing LLC was conceived by my bass professor Carl Torello (the son of Anton Torello) and I (A.J. Hawthorne). We conceived this music company to resurrect the music of Anton Torello and composers of his era who wrote for the Contrabass. The archive of Anton Torello that I received from Carl Torello has some compositions that were never published.

I am happy that the invention of music technology made bringing music back into print easier. We can create audio files of the music, then use them for performance practice, recitals, and concerts. LowNote Music Publishing specializes in music of the Contrabass and the Violoncello.

We look forward to giving performers a renewed interest in the music of this time. Many compositions range historically from the Romantic era to the modern musical era. In addition to the music of Anton Torello, we also offer music from composers like Edward Nanny, Auguste Chapuis, Franz Simandl, Alex Schmidt, Isaiah Bille, and various other composers of the late 19th century through the early 20th century.

I had the pleasure of studying with Carl Torello for six years while earning a Master of Music Performance. I eventually joined a Master of Music Education program, then a Master of Music Technology program. Upon completing the three Master’s programs, the state of Pennsylvania awarded me a Ph.D. equivalency.

As a retired Orchestra Director and Contrabass professor from Immaculata University now, I instruct a private studio of Cello and Double Bass students. I performed with the Immaculata University Symphony, Philadelphia Camerata Strings. I also substituted in the Allentown Symphony, Harrisburg Symphony, and Haddonfield Symphony. Plus, I performed with the Serenata Piano Trio, String Trio with Classical Guitar, and Jazz Quintet.

Currently, I perform in the Contrabass section with the Lansdowne Symphony and Bryn Athyn Symphony. I was a music professor and orchestra conductor at Moorestown High School and a conductor of youth orchestras in NJ. I have worked as a low-string clinician in an orchestral setting and as a specialist in music technology.

Our music company is dedicated to helping Double Bass musicians regain and reclaim their position in the music world. Through our platform, we are ready to share original manuscripts, compositions, and variations of articulations by Anton Torello and from many of his contemporaries who were great soloists and pedagogues of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

We are honored and excited to put forth the amazing works of Anton Torello, including his compositions and solos for Double Bass, Cellos, and Bass & Cello duets. With the original bowings and articulations written by Maestro Anton Torello, we are ready to help individuals master their skills and make a solid impact with their big instruments in today’s music industry.

Our music archives of Anton Torello provide access to great Double Bass solos, manuscripts, and beautiful transcriptions of Cello solos. It is the best way to enjoy the original vibe of Double Bass and master it.

Our Mission

Our mission is to give professionals, and students alike, an opportunity to develop their skills in the practice performance of solo literature. We aim to share the music of Anton Torello and many of his contemporaries who were great soloists and pedagogues of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

We aspire to share a wonderful array of concert pieces for the Contrabass, focusing on the middle romantic era to the early modern musical era. The music and accompaniment files can be used in a pedagogical format and for recitals and concerts.

History of
Anton Torello

Anton Torello was a well-reputed and popular Catalan Double Bass player. He was the one who introduced the over-handed or French bow style to the US. Anton was also the principal bass of the Philadelphia Orchestra and worked as the bass professor at the Curtis Institute of Music.
